As anyone familiar with the KJV will notice, when speaking of the Spirit, the translators were not always consistent. The translators translated pneuma as “Spirit,” but translated pneuma hagios as “Holy Ghost.” Here are some examples where the difference can be seen within the same verse:
• Luke 4:1 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
• John 1:33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
• John 7:39 But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
• Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
• 1 Corinthians 12:3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.
I was tempted to conclude that, for some stylistic reason or due to cultural conventions, the translators preferred to translate pneuma by itself as “Spirit,” but pneuma hagios as “Holy Ghost.” But I have discovered that they did not always translate pneuma hagios (or its Hebrew equivalent) as “Holy Ghost.” Consider these passages:
• Psalm 51:11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.
• Isaiah 63:11 Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? where is he that put his holy Spirit within him?
• Luke 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
• Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
• Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
• 1 Thessalonians 4:8 He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.
Does anyone know why the KJV is inconsistent in their use of “Holy Spirit” and “Holy Ghost”?1 I was inclined to think it may be due to different translation companies or different translators working on different books, but the Gospel of Luke uses both “Holy Spirit” and “Holy Ghost.” Does anyone have a better theory or explanation?

Strong’s Concordance says:
(40) hágios – properly, different (unlike), other (“otherness”), holy; for the believer, (40) (hágios) means “likeness of nature with the Lord” because “different from the world.”
The fundamental (core) meaning of (40) (hágios) is “different” – thus a temple in the 1st century was hagios (“holy”) because different from other buildings (Wm. Barclay). In the NT, (40) /hágios (“holy”) has the “technical” meaning “different from the world” because “like the Lord.”
[40 (hágios) implies something “set apart” and therefore “different (distinguished/distinct)” – i.e. “other,” because special to the Lord.]

Could it be that it merely reflects an ambivalence in English at the time between the Latin derived “spirit” and the more common English term, “ghost.” The late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries were a time of tremendous flux and change in English. As in many languages when there are two terms of approximately the same meaning, either one becomes extinct or the two terms diverge in meaning, which is what has happened hear. With the possible exception of “giving up the ghost,” most of us use “ghost” to mean one thing, while “spirit ” has another sense, except for spiritualists. It is highly unlikely that the KJV translators made a distinction between the two and merely chose the term that they preferred for euphony in a particular passage. No difference is implied by their choice of usage.

The basic premise is that the KJV were following a long standing tradition in English language Bible translation going all the way back to John Wycliffe’s translation of 1380.
The summary conclusion is that the translators had a Trinitarian bias, desiring to use the word Spirit (both in the OT And NT) to be about the Spirit of God the Father, whereas they used Ghost to be about the 3rd Person in the Trinity, i.e. the Holy Ghost.

I find translation is a problem when trying to determine what the Bible (esp. NT) is actually trying to say. We have an area of the world where people spoke different languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, Latin, etc…) and had different customs all living together. IMO, It’s quite possible Jesus spoke or at least had a working knowledge of the top languages used in the region. So we possibly have Jesus speaking in Aramaic then the story is retold later and translated into Greek then hundreds of years later a totally different culture translates the accounts into English. Could the gist of His words be properly stated in the different language and culture? I wonder how much error the translation has caused in Christianity especially in the situations when fine points are trying to be made (eg. The Holy Spirit). I’m 54 so I lived during the change from Holy Ghost to Holy Spirit. Generally for me ghost is associated with seeing a dead human being (ie. disembodied soul) . But spirit is generally taken as a spiritual being. Depending on context I can substitute ghost for spirit without to much confusion. So to give up the ghost means to die but does it really mean to stop breathing? I’m not sure how much the people of that time knew but I assume at least the ancient uneducated people would probably be amazed by the physical feeling of something they couldn’t see (eg.force of strong winds and breathe as you exhale). Perhaps I need a new Bible that has some words shown with the original word in brackets after it — spirit [pneuma].

“Ruach HaKodesh, Hebrew for ‘Holy Spirit.’ The term appears in the Tanakh (Isaiah 51:13(11), 63:10-11) and is equivalent to the ‘Spirit of God’ (Ruach-Elohim), first seen in Genesis 1:2 as having ‘moved on the face of the waters’ before God said, ‘Let there be light.’ From this verse, Isaiah 48:16 and other places in the Bible it can be learned that the Holy Spirit is divine, not less or other than God. Under the terms of the New Covenant, Yeshua (Yahshua, Jesus) sends the Holy Spirit to dwell in any person who trusts God through the Messiah. The Holy Spirit gives such a person power for service, guidance into God’s truth, gifts to facilitate holy living, and fruits of righteous behavior. (The King James Version of the English Bible uses the term ‘holy ghost’ which has nothing to do with spooks but is seventeenth-century English for ‘Holy Spirit.’)”

Regarding Isaiah 63:11 (KJV) the interpretation is presented with commentary this way,
[“‘Then his people remembered the days of old, of Moses’
This is one of the especially perplexing sentences in Isaiah. In Hebrew, it begins with the word-‘vaizkor’- ‘he remembered.’ The question arises to whom does ‘he’ refer: to Jehovah or to Israel? It should be noted that the Hebrew text reads: ‘Moses his people.’ Some manuscripts amended the Hebrew text to read: ‘Moses, his servant’ (‘abdo instead of ‘ammo’). Our translation gives the most feasible sense. It means that the people having experienced a period of great calamities finally woke up to the fact that all their misfortunes and miseries were the direct result of their disobedience and unfaithfulness. So Israel is asking agonizing questions:
‘Where is he who brought them up from the sea with the shepherd of his flock’
This is a reference to the crossing of the Red Sea under the leadership of Moses and Aaron, a central event in the history of Israel.

In the Postscript Dr. Buksbazen writes,
“At times one had to wrestle agonizingly with difficult and rarely used terms or phrases obscured by time and unknown historical allusions. Many words and expressions lent themselves to various translations and interpretations. We consulted the best translators and commentators and benefited from many of them, but where we could not agree with the bewildering variety of opinions and ideas, we were guided by the original Hebrew text and translated it as clearly as possible, always seeking to reach out beyond the words themselves to the very heart and mind of the prophet.
It should be remembered that only the Bible in the original languages was inspired by the Holy Spirit, but no translation, however excellent or popular, can make this claim. Every Bible scholar will readily admit that even with his best efforts there always remains an element of the incomprehensible, the obscure, and the mystical which eludes complete comprehension. Our own work is no exception. We are reminded of the words of St. Paul:

Great post Jason. I’ve moved to using only the ESV and I have some KJV only friends that point out that the Holy Ghost means something different than Holy Spirit. Of course they do not own a Strong’s but to their mind it is solid. I’ve tried to explain that it is the same word for both. We know Holy is not a name but a description of God’s Spirit. Imagine the fire storm if the translators didn’t give the phrase capital letters!

In Acts 7:51 (AKJV) just as the Jews resisted the Holy Ghost in the prophets of the old testament so did the Jews resist the holy ghost in the apostles of the new testament. So it seems the terms Holy Ghost and Holy Spirit is used interchangeably. The King James translators used the term Holy spirit in Isaiah 63:10 (AKJV)
In the Geneva bible Luke 11:13 (GNV) the term Holy Ghost is used. In the King James bible Luke 11:13 (AKJV) the term holy spirit is used.

Well said that, “The original meaning the author bears.” However, since it is a matter of our faith we need to be ready to give answers to everyone who asks us. KJV translates Holy Spirit as Holy Ghost. The translators assumed in their mind the concept of their readers when it is said “spirit” and “ghost”. As well known even in our days when it comes to the term “spirit” most people think of it as a wind not as a person. But when it comes to the term “ghost” the immediate picture that gets depicted in their minds is of a person. The translators wanted their readers know who the Holy Spirit is. Not a thing but a person. The Holy Spirit is the Person of the Holy Trinity. Allow Him to have a special place in your heart. SHALOM!

In the KJV, when the term “Holy Ghost” is used, it refers to a direct visitation/operation of the Holy Spirit. Once the miraculous gifts dies out with the apostles, this no longer was available to Christians who were beginning to have the written word, as miracles were to confirm the word. Once the Gospels and epistles were written and spread throughout the church, there was no need to have these gifts. There are of course varying theological beliefs regarding the indwelling if the Holy Spirit today. That’s not my debate. But Ghost was a “guest” and thus the KJV translators gives us a wonderful too to differentiate between the third part of the Godhead visiting man.

The reason Holy Ghost is used in New Testament is because ghost means the soul of a dead person Jesus was a person
Who had a human body
A spirit does not or never had a human body or was never born of human flesh

Ghost and Soul are not the same entity. One can observe the behavior of the soul by the behavior of the body but what do you have to go on if you think that a live human being has neither a ghost or a spirit? If you don’t know the nature of a soul how much less do you know about ghosts and spirits……. ?

Jesus had no ghost. You should read what happened when he went to the “safe house” where they use to meet regularly to escape from the Jews out looking for him and his followers, especially Paul of Tarsus who approved of imprisoning the followers and murdered.
Now when Jesus appeared while they were in the safe house OMG they were beside themselves.

36-41 While they were saying all this, Jesus appeared to them and said, “Peace be with you.” They thought they were seeing a ghost and were scared half to death. He continued with them, “Don’t be upset, and don’t let all these doubting questions take over. Look at my hands; look at my feet—it’s really me. Touch me. Look me over from head to toe. A ghost doesn’t have muscle and bone like this.” As he said this, he showed them his hands and feet. They still couldn’t believe what they were seeing. It was too much; it seemed too good to be true.
41-43 He asked, “Do you have any food here?” They gave him a piece of leftover fish they had cooked. He took it and ate it right before their eyes.
He was not a spirit and he was not dead, but alive!

If you look at the context of what is being said in each case you will find that when they used Holy Ghost they were speaking of the third part of The Trinity, the Comforter. When they use Holy Spirit they were talking about the Spirit of God, or The Trinity. The Holy Spirit is one Spirit with three distinct personalities. The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Luke 4 1-13 is a story about the devil leading Jesus around to a high place and to Jerusalem. It seems to say that the devil is the spirit that lead Jesus into the wilderness. Jesus is full of the Holy Ghost but it is a Spirit who leads him, two different entities.

The Bible tells me to be careful of those who pretend to have the Holy Ghost because they tell lies (2 Peter 2:1). The Bible says the Holy Ghost will answer all our questions (John 14:26). I don’t feel anyone has the Holy Ghost no one has any answers. I don’t want to be baptized to something that doesn’t exist.
1 Corinthians 2:10 says the Holy Ghost searches the deep things of God but Romans 8:27 says according to God the Holy Ghost doesn’t search us. John 4:24 says God is a spirit and 2 Corinthians 3:17 says Jesus is a spirit. Colossians 1:25-27 says the mystery is Jesus is in us. John 14:23 says God is inside us too. I don’t believe the Holy Ghost, the Father and Son are all the same person because the Son doesn’t know when he is coming only God does (Matthew 24:36). 1 Timothy 2:5 & 1 John 2:1 says Jesus is the mediator and advocate. I wondered if Jesus is the Holy Ghost, because the Holy Ghost is the petitioner but Matthew 1:18 creates a complication because he isn’t his Father.
Right now, I don’t believe there is a Holy Ghost. If no one can explain it than no one has it. Can you explain to me the Holy Ghost or is the Holy Ghost Jesus and God working together? I look forward to hearing from you soon.

God (THE FATHER) is SPIRIT… And never tasted death… And had not touched physical for as a human being. Jesus came to earth as a human … Bled and died… Therefore the spirit He carried was the SPIRIT OF GOD and THE HOLY GHOST … Because He was both God AND Man… The Holy Ghost is that part of Him that He imparted to US to be our Comforter and teacher … While being led by His Holy Spirit in which way we should go

When I see and hear young or old men speak as though they are some kind of authority; It causes me to return to Job 38 and to consider what God had to say to Job and how little Job had to say to God once he recognized his position. When God said “Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge” Sometimes to listen to men speak and act like they know exactly what God meant when He inspired Holy Men to put His Words and His feelings down on paper by His Spirit. And now we come along some two, three or more thousand years later and we try to convince men who are truly searching the word for truth. When it comes to the first second or third person of the Holy Trinity; it maybe that God touches each man’s heart(soul) in a way to show us how much He really LOVES us. I think Job was surprised when he really had no answer, and sometime we might just be better off leaving the interpretation to the Holy Ghost or the Holy Spirit. Again this is just my opinion.

Ghost was the Anglo-Saxon word for the Latinized “spirit.” In 1611 both words were interchangeable. It’s all a tempest in a teapot.

The Holy Ghost is Evidence of Speaking in Tongues According to Act:2-4, because you can only receive The Holy Ghost when you call on the Name Jesus, until he Fills you up with The Holy Ghost. When you receive Holy Ghost you will know it. I received The Holy Ghost at the age of 10 years old. I have had The Holy Ghost for 59 years. When I received The Holy Ghost I spoke in an unknown tongue and I felt so clean inside. I was not the same person. I felt Brand New. This is The Greatest Feeling in The World is to walk around on earth and be witnessing for Jesus and getting people to Believe in Jesus, Death, Burial, Resurrection. Jesus came to Save us and He sent The Holy Ghost to
Keep us from Sinning. Jesus is Real and you want to be ready when he returns. We Must live Saved and Holy because one day we will stand In The Judgment of God to be Judged.
Jesus is coming back for Holy Ghost Righteous people that have live and died according to the Word of God. All over the World people must be Ready For The Lord Jesus Coming.

Praise Jesus everyone ! First …it is important to use a KJV bible to understand these 2 scriotures I will list. You will have to study what God gives me here to share. In the name of Jesus. Anoint my lips and figertips.
1 Cor. 12 : 4 – 11
Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are “DIFFERENCES OF ADMINISTRATIONS” , but the same Lord.and there are “DIVERSITIES OF OPERATIONS” butit is the “SAME GOD WHICH WORKETH IN ALL.”
Now I made bold the important key words here which are pertaining to various ways God works. We know God is Spirit in his fullness. Hes Alive and is the word. And the word was with God and is God named Jesus. 1. OMISCIENT, 2. OMNIPRESENT, and 3.OMNIPOTENT. 1. ALL KNOWING 2. EVERYWHERE AT ONCE 3. ALL POWERFULL
So understanding God is Spirit…you can understand hes all powerfull as God and can do all things for his Holy purpose. So in his omnipresence or power to be everywhere at once hearing prayers, sending blessings, healing, keeping the earth and its inhabitants sustained etc. His Holy Spirit is everywhere. It surronds us, its always with us, it guides us, speaks to us, protects, etc. If you study the Kjv scriptures on Holy Spirit…youll notice its God ss the function of omnipresence snd omnipotency. Its always referring to the surrounding, or His spirit dwelling with us, around us always. Now thats a fact. Believers or non believers. Because we can not live without the Holy Spirit Sustaining us. Hes in the air we breath, the blessing of our food when we eat to not eat something that can make us sick. Etc. So Holy Spirit is a functiin of God being everywhere for everything whatever the situation at once or at the same time alwsys. Hes even on his throne as Jesus. The Power of God. Power in his name. Praise God . Thats what right hand of God interpretd. Power. So Jesus wss since the beginning since hes the word as John 1: 1 states. Jesus is everywhere in Spirit and in truth. Now there was no record of the function for Holy Ghost in the Old Testament. Thats because Jesus had not died yet. If you remember Joel 2 – 28 says…”And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh,…
That was prophesy in OT. In Acts 2 : 1 -4 it says …And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all in on accord in on place. And suddenly there came a mighty wind, and it filles the house wher they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it dst upon each of them.And they were filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. ” Somebody say Amen. Now notice Ghost and Spirit. This book of Acts was translated in one language. Not two. So theres a purpose. These functions of God need titles for the understanding of what God is teaching us. Now there in that last scripture notice it says they were “FILLED”. So thats the baptism of the Spirit. It says the Spirit gave them utterance. The cloven tongues csme upon them. Baptism of the Spirit. The infilling of the Holy Ghost. If you start to study on the Holy Ghost it will refer to bein full of…and Jesus full of, or and they full of the HG. Oay attention to detaik on the 2 functions. The infilling of the hoky ghost is important. And churches dont preach the infilling because our enemy wants to remove the word of god from us. What better way than to not take the physical book away…but the most important term of the function that allows you to ave god abiding in you, because when you have recieved the baptism of the Holy Ghost…Its a gift, you now have authority in Jesus. You have power from God. To cast out demons, heal the sick, minister with God spesking through you. Etc. Thats why many people lost faith in Speaking tongues. Its a celestial message from god and a sign you have the Holy Ghost. Not many will be chosen because they nevrr learned about the truth in being baptized by water and spirit to entrr heaven
They only know Holy Spirit and fall for as ” once you believe you have the Holy Spirit and sre saved. Not the case. You are on your way…but Jesus made it oretty clear to Nicodemus. Although it is true once you come to Jesus and believe in him you are saved or will be saved because you found the lord. But studying reveals alot of faith and works we are taught to use with faith in order to run the race for tgat prize or gift. The high calling of our lord Jesus. So I can go on…but its simple if you look at it like this.
1. An auto parts store – 1 Sole Entity as a business. FATHER – Jesus – Head
2. Administrations or offices within – Holy Spirit- Holy Ghost – Jesus -Word…Now these are in the same body…just members performing theyre assigned task. As vital organs.
3. Functions – Omnipotency , omnipresence, omniscient, healing, bledding, etc.
All in all 1 God. Never 3 persons. 1 God with a name oabove all names Jesus…who has robed hiself in flesh to walk among us and leave his word . To fullfill the oroohesy that we might be saved. He died on the vross where it days ” he gave up the ghost.” Hallelujah. And that promise in Acts 2 : 38 is for everyone. All have access directly now to Jesus. I forgot to press the fact how importsnt and urgent that we tell others that the anti christ has begun to remove the word with these Nlt, nkjv, the meddage, etv. These lack definition of wording because the Olde English words had different meanings than our U.S. Witchcraft English. So dont be bamboozled if you pastor or false teacher says oh the w HS and H G ard the ssme. Thats true but not fruth. Its ddception using a true point. But not it truth in fullness. The Holy Spirit is the Holy Spirit of God that has always strived with human kind. The Holy Ghost is the gift you received when being baptized with the Holy Ghost. The old testament uses Holy Spirit because the holy Ghost had not came to human kind until after the coming of Jesus Christ and his death. Therefore, the Holy Spirit is the portion of God’s Spirit that is given unto his people and the Holy Ghost is the baptism of the three person of God, the Comforter that was given after Christ left us. This is very plain is simple according to the KJV Bible. The Holy Ghost told me in the prayer (conversation) that there would come a day when many would call him the Holy Spirit and not to feed into this because He would always be the Holy Ghost and different the the Holy Spirit. This my own personal opinion. Why complicate simplicity? God is God and we as humans tend not to accept God’s way of thinking. Always trying to figure God out. I believe the AKJV is the Word of Truth and can accept the way it is written. In simple terms as I can describe and understand the term Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit and their usage do relate to the same person but in a relational manner of personal order. A way in which I can understand is in an example of proper name and descriptive person. (Example such as: a grandpa(Holy Spirit) but his name is John(Holy Ghost), same person but in a different descriptive manner (one more personally social, one more personally in relation). Remember God is Spirit and must be worshipped in spirit and truth (John 4:24). In Revelation 3:1 there are “seven Spirits of God”. Whether He be another comforter, leader, guide, sealer, third person of Godhead, we as man will never figure it out till “we see Him as He is” but me as part of the Body of Christ will say the Holy Ghost by name is God’s person and by the Holy Spirit is my “ABBA, Daddy”, one and the same.
