“Look, I don’t think that it’s useful to bring up Mormonism as a cult in the political discussion. It’s not relevant to Romney’s candidacy and most people misunderstand what we mean by ‘cult.’ There are two definitions – a sociological one that involves brainwashing and coercion, and a theological one that examines doctrine. Average people think of the former and misunderstand the point.”—Melinda Penner

I think that’s right about Mormonism. But as to UPC, I think many people who call it a cult are talking about brainwashing and coercion.

Arthur,
What is your background? You can email me personally if you want: jasondulle@yahoo.com
As far as applying “cult” to UPC, some call us a cult in a theological sense, while some call us a cult in a sociological sense. Based on the theological principles the Trinitarians are employing, I can understand calling the UPC a cult of Christianity (though I disagree with doing so). Having heard about the teachings and methods of some UPC pastors, I wouldn’t balk at identifying some of our pastors as cultic either. However, that cannot be said of the UPC as a whole. On the whole it is simply not true.
