If you are like me, you can’t help but to stare at those who look and dress anti-socially. You know, piercings in unimaginable places, hair styles that require enormous amounts of creativity and hairspray, or clothes that even fashion designers would not sport on the runway. What do you say if you get caught staring, and the person says to you, “What are you looking at?” I’ve come up with a little line: “If you want to look different from everyone else in society, don’t be surprised when everyone else in society looks at you differently.”

“I was just thinking how much time you must spend on your looks in order to make it appear that you don’t spend much time on your looks”
or
“I didn’t mean to stare. It’s just that I’ve always had a thing for bag ladies.”

Arthur,
That first one is so very true! It reminds me of something. Many of these people do not want to be a follower of society. They want to be their own person. I would love to point out to them that they are not their own person. Their identity is an anti-society identity. By defining themselves in a way that is different than society, they are actually letting society define them. It’s inescapable.

Interesting topic!
I am not sure what I would say if caught staring at someone’s appearance…but prayerfully it will be something to ease any tension that rises, because from what I have learned, witnessed, and somewhat experienced in the past, staring can cause problems and an aggressive exchange to potentially develop, regardless of the reasons of the stare! lol. However, interesting responses you guys gave…maybe I would warmly smile and say with caution yet a hint of earnest curiosity, “why don’t you tell me?!” — let THEM explain what they are looking like, lol…*shurgs*…
