I’ve begun a new podcast series on the historical evidence for the resurrection of Jesus. The series will not only cover the historical evidence for Jesus’ resurrection, but also explore alternative (naturalistic) explanations, the evidence for Jesus’ existence, the theological and practical significance of the resurrection, questions and objections, our own future resurrection, an examination of the Shroud of Turin, and a harmonization of the gospel accounts of Jesus’ death and resurrection.

I just finished listening to podcast 144 and I understand your points but the apostle Paul claims that all scripture is inspired by God whereas other historical documents do not make a claim of the author being divinely inspired. Unlike humans God is perfect. How do you explain inspiration and these differences?

The point I was trying to make in that episode and will further elaborate on in the subsequent episodes, is that the kind of differences we see in the gospels are not errors but the kinds of variability expected in ancient historical writing, and thus pose no problem to divine inspiration or inerrancy. They only pose a problem if one thinks that divine inspiration requires a video-view of the events, and, I argued, that is unfair because it imposes modern standards of historiography on non-modern ancient writers. Indeed, I would argue that many of the literary devices employed by the gospel authors in their retelling of the historical events are used by people today in non-technical retellings of historical events. For example, we’ll say something like “Today, the president announced that he will…” when in fact it was the president’s press secretary, not the president himself. No one thinks the report is in error. We understand that the representative of the president is a stand-in for the president himself.
