CA has proposed a bill that would allow for school kids to use the bathroom of their choice, based on their own perceived gender identity. Craziness.

Do you (the general you) not allow your children to use the same bathroom in your house? What might happen if you do?

No, they don’t use the bathroom at the same time. But even if they did, my children aren’t physically attracted to one another. That’s not the case in schools. Under this bill, a boy can simply make the claim that he sees himself as a female, and he can use the girl’s bathroom and no one can challenge him. This is a great way for school boys to get a thrill.

I think you missed an important point about the story:
Yes the children use the same bathroom in your house but NOT at the same time.
HOWEVER I DO think that this is the precursor for practicing sexual foreplay. Society has not civilized enough yet to go directly into special classrooms for sexual foreplay so it will still be hidden away in secret as a dirty thing so this plan is a probable first step in the classroom direction through the conduit of the communal washroom.
A dirty thing, I hasten to add, by which every human being who ever walked this earth was conceived, bar none.
Hey maybe it’s time we viewed sexuality as a natural sense of pleasure and allow it to be nurtured without denigrating our youth as they develop from caterpillar to the cocoon wrapped chrysalis (the Pupa aka the Pupil) to the Beautiful Adult Butterfly.
Sex “out in the open” OMG can that ever be true; are we ready for sexual exposure as a good thing instead of a shameful thing? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v11Ibv3NjvE&list=FL0T-1e5_lQEvmB4v1kgv4aA

The practical effects isn’t even the real issue, however. The issue is the political correctness involved.
But does anyone stop to think how the rest of the people in the bathroom will feel about this? Particularly females?

NotAScientist:
You are missing an important point in this story:
Children can use the same washroom at home but they generally don’t use it at the same time as each other which is not the case in a large communal washroom in school.
Nevertheless, it will inevitably be used for sexual foreplay which is not a bad thing in and of itself but that it must go through the washroom instead of special classrooms for supervised activity is the negative here.
But imagine sex without shame, OMG can that be coming to a school near you? Is Society civilizing finally from the dark ages of shame, hide ‘n’ seek and don’t dare speak about the natural pleasure of sexuality in the open.
Think of it this way the caterpillar becomes a wrapped cocoon(a pupa, aka the pupil) and then the Big Beautiful Bold Adult Butterfly. Imagine the kinder and gentler world our kids would grow up in without the shame and deceit associated with “Sex In The Open”, the strongest motiving force in the world.
What a reality show that will be when it happens! Knowledge is a wonderful event that sets one free like belief never can!

The language of the bill reminds me of a lot of the politically correct rhetoric we hear these days where people are afraid to acknowledge differences between some people (or unions/groups of people), or think/imply that doing so is somehow hateful or a violation of rights. So we end up with nonsense like this. The world becomes a funny place when we are no longer allowed to differentiate between things.

I’m reminded of a speech that Rush Limbaugh gave at a CPAC convention a few years ago. He talked about how the push to eliminate any and all discrimination will eventualy leave us utterly indiscriminate. That gender has become a matter of one’s opinion profoundly proves Limbaugh’s point.

Why can’t they just have unisex toilets? I’m not too fussed about them using the same toilets, but I am bothered that they’re still segregated but on a child’s whim!
Although looking at the bill, does it not mean that a boy can now use the female changing facilities (incl. showers) if he decides to “consider” himself a girl?!? That is an issue unless all schools suddenly adopt individual changing rooms.

Scott, if it only applied to elementary school kids it may not be so bad, but this would go all the way up to teens. There could be major problems.
We also have to consider the motivation for the law. It’s not due to a shortage of bathrooms, or to solve some problem, but to accommodate the desires of a few. It also sends the message that when it comes to public policy, biology is not determinative. Rather, it’s one’s personal perception of their gender. The individual is creating their own reality against reality, and the state is approving of it.
And you are right, it’s not just bathrooms. It’s “facilities,” which would include showers I would think.

what would be the logical extensions of passing such a bill? Who’s pushing for this legislation? Why are they pushing for this legislation? ( To help confused people feel more comfortable? To help unconfused people feel uncomfortable? )

Richard:
The logical extensions of passing such a Bill would be:
1. An understanding that allows one to accept the fact of knowledge that true gender occurs in the brain and not in the apparent genitalia. (The result of an anomaly during gestation)
2. That Knowledge sets people free from the tyranny of belief based on religious and cultural bias.
3. That Acceptance by society at large will raise the esteem of a community shunned for thousands of years and forced to live in a closet.
4. Having a gender anomaly does not inevitably lead to a psychosocial problem. However, adolescents with gender anomalies are at an elevated risk for developing psychosocial problems especially those relating to self-concept, peer relationships and appearance. A gender anomaly may impact an individual’s self-esteem, social skills and behavior and contribute to the Closet Syndrome by the hate culture most responsible for alienating them, Religion. And that’s a good thing.
5. Confusion exists because of lack of knowledge; knowledge casts out confusion like light casts out darkness and knowledge is a progress path civilizing the world’s people.

Leo, those are some lofty ideals, but I don’t think they are based in reality.
Here’s what I think will happen:
– Perverted jokers (most likely boys), will go into these restrooms under the guise of gender neutrality, only to hope for a peek of some part of female anatomy they have no business seeing.
– Considering the age in which we live, it will not surprise me if these jokers try to capture some or all of what they see on a smartphone camera. Then they will post it online, or at least share it with friends, thus humiliating the person in the video.
– Bullying and violence will increase when, someone who experiences gender confusion, gender neutrality, or perceives they are of an opposite gender than their biological sex, thinks to innocently use one of these restrooms, and someone, most likely another young person, without your lofty ideals, will notice. And then, that person who attempted to use such a restroom will become the target for terrible mistreatment, hazing, pranks, shunning, and etc.
– Depression, marginalization, ostracism, and possible suicides among young people will increase as a direct result. The so-called Closet will become more jam-packed than ever.
– Instead of realizing that the problem was in the legislation that allowed for all this to occur, there will be a moral outrage among the always vocal minority (due to the above), and further re-conditioning of society will be heaped upon the average Americans who makes up the majority.
– The cultural gap in this country will deepen. The majority will get sick and tired of the few dictating to them how the world’s supposed to be.
– In a terrible blacklash, the majority will exert its power and slamdunk all this nonsense back where it belongs.
-Wash, Rinse, Repeat.

Thank you for your comments.
It is no small wonder that you do not have the lofty ideals of which you speak because the current cultural continuum; as a matter of fact, you cite in your half empty scenario glass:
1. Perverted jokers.
2. Smartphone camera shots for humiliation
3. Bullying and violence
4. Depression, marginalization, ostracism
5. Moral outrage because of the legislation
6. The cultural gap
7. The majority will exert its
But Aaron don’t you see what you are really claiming here? these claims you are predicting, are the very claims that are already happening today and the moral outrage already rearing its head in defiance is because of the same sex marriage LEGISLATION around the country and around the world. And by whom? The majority that still wants to exert its power and influence: RELIGION.
I believe that lawmakers will have enough foresight to imagine that jokers will arise and include sections and clauses in the Bill that will provide for penalties for misuse of the legislation by jokers.
It seems to me that your knee jerk reaction is only that, a reaction, because it is easier to find fault with activists trying to resolve problems than it is to come up with alternative ideas. That’s politics for you.
Conspiracists will always find an audience to agree with them; in fact, the books about the next conspiracy are already written and with pen stroke editing the mere insertion of the Conspiracy, a few choice and current names and the book goes to publishers as the Book Tours and University speaking venues are already listed for the money making machine of Bingo The Money God.
I am constantly reminded of the Cherokee Legend when it comes to the half full / half empty glass of water that defines the difference between the pessimist, the optimist:
CHEROKEE LEGEND:
CHIEF: A fight is going on inside every other person between two wolves. One is evil; he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other is good; he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.
GRANDSON: Which wolf will win?
CHIEF: The one you feed.
There is another group to consider and that is The Opportunist who drinks the water and prepares to cash in on the Conspiracy Prophecy.
I believe you are wrong.
I know that the righteous for progress see a light glowing from a candle; I know that reactivists do not, because their candle in under the tub where the oxygen of civilizing light is dimming and soon will extinguish as the next generation plods on toward that more perfect place in the new earth The Order of Worldwide Reverence: Humanity Uniting Humans, (HUH).

Leo, you forgot the Realists, who, recognizing the cultural patterns already experienced and seen in the world, have enough sense to realize some things never change.
If nowhere else, the U.S.A. is in a tale-spin of cultural entropy. Not sure if you live here, or are an outside observer, but if you ever get a good long whiff of what’s really going on around here, at the ground level, you’ll realize this isn’t about half-full, half-empty. It’s just recognizing that the cup is neither full nor empty, and that fact, that half-ness, is where the battle exists. So until either the cultural cup is filled, or drained outright, neither side of the culture wars will stop fighting, making legislation like this a waste of time, money, effort, and energy.

I can’t really decipher your cultural cup; are you saying that sexual gender differences is destroying the cultural system? That it has to be filled (what’s that mean?) or drained(what’s that mean?) and then the cultural wars will stop fighting(what’s that mean?)

I’m talking about the Realist position. The Realist merely observes that the cup is neither half full nor half empty (i.e. it’s neither an optimistic, nor pessimistic view).
In this particular case, the Realists position is that this is a cultural war of attrition. Neither side is going to win as long as the cup is only half-anything.
Either make the cup full or make the cup empty.
I’m suggesting that the push to make the cultural cup a little fuller and advance this type of legislature is going to have severe repercussions that lead to a backlash, which will then cause the cup to empty out. Back and forth, back and forth.
So, the better idea is to stop offering up this kind of nonsensical, won’t do any good legislation and do something more important with taxpayer money.

Leonardo,
What would you say to someone who thought that they were really a rabbit? Is species determined by one’s mind? Of course not! So why think that gender is? Gender is determined by one’s biology. If one’s perception of himself is not in line with the objective biological reality, that should clue is into where the problem lies: the mind. The body works just fine. It’s beyond ludicrous to say to someone who denies their own biological reality that the problem is with their biology, not their mind.

With all due respect you are confused about the mind and the brain. Biology includes the brain of which the mind is a function of. I am not saying nor can anyone else say, as you allude to, that the mind determines sexual gender, that is not what I said because the mind is not subject to gestation formation, the mind is only a function of the brain and it is the brain that is subject to gestation anomalies.
The mind can only function with the tools the brain is endowed with or its lack thereof. Nobody thinks themselves or wills themselves to be a certain gender; that is the argument of those who will not accept gender anomalies formed in the gestation period or a genetic effect and therefore stake their claim ONLY that gender is a lifestyle choice. Sure it is a lifestyle but not a choice of the mind, rather an inevitable consequence of the brain.
Michelle Bachman has a school for converting gay people based solely on their belief that gender is a lifestyle choice but that is their belief that the mind is in control and not the brain. Two different pieces of the puzzle to discern.

Leo,
Why do they need psychiatric treatment, but the homosexual/transgender does not? Both think that they are someone other than what their biology indicates they are. It seems to me that biology is objective, whereas psychology is subjective, and when there is a conflict between the two, we look to the objective to tell us what is real.

You are trying to compare apples and orangutans.
“Both think they are someone….”. Since when does anyone think an animal rabbit is a human “someone”. Your rabbit hypothetical is not a serious argument. It’s a schoolboy attempt to support an argument that’s losing the battle on every front.
Which is why you refuse to accept the biology of the brain and insist at looking to the biology of the genitals and stereotypical gender identification.
Where do you think psychology has its roots, in the genitals or in the brain? And how would you know the difference? You still insist that thinking determines gender when in fact the biology of the brain determines inasfar as gender is determine post fetal development.
The testicles produce androgens which are quite important to the male, because even a genetically male embryo will develop female characteristics if androgens are not secreted at the right time or if the fetus is insensitive to androgens. With the brain as with sexual organs, the presence of androgens during the appropriate critical stage of development may be the factor that programs the central nervous system to develop male sexual behaviours (Bocklandt & Vilain 2007)
Prenatal development depends on carefully orchestrated developmental stages.. At any stage, sex hormone irregularities. genetic abnormalities, or exposure of the fetus to inappropriate maternal hormones can result is atypical sexual differentiation. The result can be a child born with ambiguous genitals or with the external genitals of one sex and the genetic makeup of the other sex.
