The power to tax is the power to enslave. That’s not to say taxation itself is immoral. All of us can agree to a reasonable amount of taxes to pay for a functional government and basic social resources like funding the military, paving roads, and the like. But the bigger the government gets, the more taxes it needs, and the more money it takes. If the government taxed an individual 100% of their income, they will have effectively enslaved them because they are working entirely for the government and not benefiting from their own work. If the individual was allowed to keep 10% of their earnings, they are little better than a slave. It’s just a matter of degree. As this entitlement culture demands more and more, the government will continue to take more and more in taxes, enslaving us degree by degree. If you want freedom, keep our government small.

The power to tax is the power to enslave

Jason,
Wintery Knight just had a similar post this week. if it’s OK, I will copy my comments I posted here…..
Wonderful common sense as usual. You, again, sum up a lot of uncomfortable truth in short space. [True for you as well Jason!]
[Wintery said]…..”But many Christians escape the need to be generous with their own money by voting for the secular government to take someone else’s money. ”
I’d sum this up: “Taking” here is awfully akin to “stealing”. And stealing with none of the usual rule of law recourses available, but rather jail and fines (ie: more stealing) for anyone who does not pony up.
The reality is that we are indeed slaves to a brutal, thuggish system of government that destroys lives. It harms or destroys the most virtuous and honest citizens who are hard working people, who would never dream of stealing or treating anyone like the government treats them. What are taxes?: it’s not just money, it’s blood money which represents the actual daily sweat, sacrifice, and lives of hard working people. The government, as it exists, is a public enemy in the business of destroying lives. It must be scaled down to the size it was Constitutionally meant to be (ie: 95% smaller than it is right now), resisted and fought.
I am not a libertarian, but a classical conservative, Christian citizen. The government has stolen, at gunpoint, over half of the money I made, to date. I sacrificed some of my best years, giving up most all of the fun stuff that other folks my age were doing, in order to get to and though medical school, and then to persist in a very demanding career.
It’s exceedingly deflating disincentive to have a government that is such an enemy to people like me.
{Added comment] I love to give to charity, but the government greatly restricts that ability. I believe that government oppression of working middle class folks coupled with expansive entitlements does incalculable damage to the souls of both groups. Modern government works to destroy love of neighbor – what has always been the heart and soul of America.
Vote Ted Cruz – I think he is our best hope.
